GroundUP Music Festival -- 3rd Annual -- February 8-10, 2019 -- Miami, FL

I attended the inaugural GroundUP Music Festival in Miami 2017 (my first music festival EVER :-O): http://www.seanfenlon.com/2017/groundup-music-festival-2017-video-compilation-and-long-blog-post/

I also attended the GroundUP Music Festival in 2018: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bTIBC3fl55A

Naturally, I will be attending the GroundUP Music Festival in February of 2019 as well: http://festival.groundupmusic.net/

The lineup for the 2019 Festival was recently announced and includes…

Snarky Puppy

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_XJ_s5IsQc

Keynote performance each of the three nights of the Festival, same as 2017 & 2018

World Premiere – first LIVE performance of their new unreleased recording (apparently many band member contributing compositions this time – usually mostly Mike League songs)

Band Leader Michael League is also Head of GroundUP Music

Different band members swapped in and out of the lineup each night, same as 2017 & 2018

Lalah Hathaway – Artist-at-Large

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0SJIgTLe0hc

Previous Artists-at-Large at the GroundUP Music Festive = Esperanza Spalding (2017) and Lionel Loueke (2018)

Eulaulah Donyll "Lalah" Hathaway is an American R&B vocalist: https://www.lalahhathaway.com/

Participated in Snarky Puppy Family Dinner Volume 1 (2014) “Something” which won a Grammy Award in the R&B category (Snarky Puppy’s first Grammy Award)

One of only a few people on the planet I have observed capable of “Multiphonics” (Bobby McFerrin being one of the others)

David Crosby

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HiDOMuhpqUo

Band leader of the legendary Crosby, Stills, Nash (& Young)

Part of Snarky Puppy Family Dinner Volume 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O1nJJC8IL0M

Headliner of the GroundUP Music Festival 2017: https://twitter.com/seanfenlon/status/830253063176908800

David Crosby is now an artist on Michael League’s GroundUP Music Label – now including Michael League, Becca Stevens, and Michelle Willis in his band

A name that can STILL sell records (mostly to baby boomers) :-)

Tank and the Bangas

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QKzobTCIRDw

First timer @ GroundUP Music Festival

From New Orleans: http://www.tankandthebangas.com/

Winner of NPR Music Tiny Desk Music Contest 2017

Combines R&B with Hip Hop's poetry and rollercoaster storytelling

Musicians: Tarriona Tank Ball (vocals); Jelly Joseph (vocals); Merell Burkett Jr. (keys); Norman Spence II (keys); Joshua Johnson (drums); Jonathan Johnson (bass); Albert Allenback (saxophone)

Susana Baca

Bill Laurance

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_WysQreTa-M

Brilliant keyboard player from the UK – I refer to him as “Sir Bill” :-)

Frequent keyboardist with Snarky Puppy: http://www.billlaurance.com/

Performed at GroundUP Music Festival 2017: https://youtu.be/ou0IwM1JavM?t=202

The Funky Knuckles

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OC_hDeH_nGI

Instrumental group from Texas (like Snarky Puppy), but Dallas rather than Austin: https://www.thefunkyknuckles.com/

Led by Caleb Sean McCampbell – brilliant and charismatic keyboardist

Includes freakishly-technical bass player Wes Stephenson

Appeals to fans of extremely-technical jam bands (like me :-)

Performed at the GroundUP Music Festival 2017: https://youtu.be/ou0IwM1JavM?t=3270

Ghost Note

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CwNuMYSCfWc

First time performing at the GroundUP Music Festival

PRD Mais

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DMn-IK-JzkU

PRD Mais is a collection of young and talented percussionists from Brazil: https://www.facebook.com/prdmais/

Founded by Snarky Puppy percussionist and my friend Bernardo Aguiar (and Gabriel Policarpo)

Also, my percussionist friend Brian Potts, Snarky Puppy sax player Chris Bullock and Snarky Puppy Family Dinner Volume 2 musician Carlos Malta

Bernardo and Carlos participated in GroundUP Music Festival (2017), but PRD Mais = first time performing at the GroundUP Music Festival

Bokante’

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X-DoGgMTfiY

Snarky Puppy Bandleader Michael League leads Bokante’ as well, but on Baritone Guitar rather than electric bass: http://bokante.com/

The group features other Snarky Puppy band members Keita Ogawa (Percussion) and guitarists Chris McQueen and Bob Lanzetti

The music goes from Zeppelin-esque blues stomp to folkloric Caribbean kaladja at will, with a strong, yet empathetic, lyrical approach

Bokante’ vocalist Malika Tirolien was one of the vocalist that appeared on Snarky Puppy Family Dinner Volume 1

Bokante’ lap steel guitar player Roosevelt Collier performed with his band at the 2018 GroundUP Music Festival

Bokante’ debuted the first live performance ever at the 2017 GroundUP Music Festival

Canadian vocalist Michelle Willis performed alongside vocalist Laura Mvula in Snarky Puppy Family Dinner Volume 2: http://www.michellewillis.ca/

Michelle Willis assembled a band made up of mostly Snarky Puppy members and performed at the 2017 GroundUP Music Festival: https://youtu.be/ou0IwM1JavM?t=130

La Perla ?

A surprise act, perhaps?

I have never heard of them and can’t seem to find them online.

How does a named act at the 2019 GroundUP Music Festival avoid the all-knowing eyes of Google?
